Emergency Prep Article
By President Sherry Peterson
My dear brothers and sisters, this newsletter will be one of our stakes many resources to educate, encourage and inform our members about emergency preparedness. Over the past three years we have implemented monthly Provident Living Classes, Stake Bulk Food Buying and the “Power of Three” programs which have been under the direction of Holly Payne the Stake Relief Society Emergency Preparedness Specialist. Through Holly’s efforts I feel we have brought preparedness to a new level and awareness which was needed in our stake. As we look forward to 2014 we will be working closely with the Priesthood and continue to elevate our education and training by adding a quarterly emergency preparedness training session. It is my hope that in the coming years that we will continue to enlighten our members about the importance of being prepared for physical, financial and personal emergencies.

President’s Message
The Lord commands us to be prepared in all things. Nephi states in the Book of Mormon "the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them". So it is with our emergency preparedness. We should, as prophets have counseled us, be spiritually and physically prepared. When prepared, we enjoy peace as the Lord provides the means for us to keep his commandments.Elder Richard Maynes said in the Sunday afternoon Conference session, “Being spiritually prepared means we have developed spiritual stamina or strength. We will consistently choose the right. We will become immovable in our desire and ability to live the gospel. As an anonymous author once said, “You must become the rock the river cannot wash away.”

A basic recipe is 2/3 cup magic mix to 1 cup water. Heat on low and whisk to blend and thicken. Then add cheese or other seasonings as desired. See http://hbnfoodstorage.blogspot.com/ for suggested uses.

My dear brothers and sisters, the last thing we want to happen is an emergency situation that will upend out lives and families. Even though it is the last thing we would want to happen it should be the first thing on our minds that if, such a catastrophe should occur, that we are as prepared as possible. If something does happen, it won’t happen when our family and friends are together. We will probably be spread out across the city or county; at school or at work, but not together. On a normal day we have all of the luxuries: our cell phones and texting, our televisions and our radios.
Recently the Ladera Ranch area had a major power outage – they lost ALL cell service and power to their homes – that was a small event. Are you and your family prepared to handle the same thing for a day or a week or month?
